S1-2 Public Speaking Workshops and Competitions

During the post-exam period, 2 workshops were conducted in June to equip S1-2 students with myriads of public speaking skills.

 

In July, S1 and S2 public speaking competitions were held. Two contestants for prepared speech and two for impromptu speech were chosen from each class. For prepared speech, the eight contestants had to deliver a 2-minute speech based on the theme Environment Protection. For impromptu speech, the eight contestants had to give a 1.5-minute speech without any preparation. Besides champion, 1^st runner-up and 2^nd runner-up, an Audience Award was included, which allowed the audience members to vote for and give comments to their favourite speakers. The panel of adjudicators included our English teachers.

 

Having had ample chance to practise during the workshops and competitions, S1-2 students learnt a wide range of public speaking skills, which could further prepare them for the speaking examination in DSE format. Despite the fact that not all of them were used to giving impromptu speeches and only 20 words were allowed on their cue cards, most of the contestants’ performances were satisfactory. They were able to sustain their speeches with confidence and various techniques. With Audience Award, the audience could have their say in deciding who the winners were, which also facilitated peer-learning.
