S3&4 English Debating Competition
After students had learnt some basic debating skills before their examinations, semi-finals for S3 and S4 classes were held on 2 July 2025. The winners entered the finals on 7 July 2025. The motion for S3 was “That that the school should allow students to use ChatGPT and other AI chatbots to complete their schoolwork.” (3B Affirmative vs 3A Opposition) and the one for S4 was “That a four-day school week should be adopted in your school.” (4B Affirmative vs 4C Opposition). The panel of adjudicators included our English, Chinese History and Mathematics teachers.
Students benefitted from the activities by learning different debating skills, which increased their confidence in expressing their thoughts in English. They also learnt how to organize their arguments effectively and to adopt an appropriate manner of delivery. Their critical thinking skills were honed and leadership skills were enhanced. The adjudicators feedback could also provide students with insights on developing their persuasion skills.
All contestants’ performance was satisfactory, as they were able to use various techniques in the competitions. With Audience Award, the audience could have their say in deciding who the winners were, which also facilitated peer-learning.
