The delayed Luhe party was here on 25 and 26 November; 19 students were put in five senior classes (1 student could not join us because of illness). Three teachers came with them. Before they attended classes, they were in a briefing on the history of King Ling College, the characteristics of the school, our requirements for students, and the like. One of which was the no mobile phone policy on campus. I was impressed, at once, that the teachers had already collected students’ mobile phones; I volunteered to keep them for students until the lessons were over. Talk about obedience and cooperation.
There were some difficulties for students in attending English lessons, but they expressed complete comprehension in mathematics. Economics was a foreign concept to younger students but computing, despite different terminologies, was manageable. Since two schools have different curricula, the confusion in the classroom is understandable, for there is no prior knowledge to the lessons. But our focus is more on the experience, the friendship, the meal routine, and of course, the neck-and-neck basketball match, the chemistry teacher staff development, the administration discussion between the teachers and me, the sister school exchange plans in the future, the student leader forum, the flag raising workshop, the morning news reading and announcement, the Landscape interviews, and the farewell party. More than 10 school activities were prepared for our peers within two days, in addition to sitting in in the classroom.
In many occasions, I have said that students would not remember the textbook knowledge but will remember the laughter and the silliness in everyday life on campus. Knowledge received in the classroom becomes part of our life; it enhances our understanding and worldview for our immediate environment. That’s the reason we require good in-class performance and keep sending students to different off campus competitions, social services, and joint-school activities, in addition to sending them outside Hong Kong to see the world. We equally welcome the opportunity when the world, our sister schools, come to us. All these opportunities allow us to grow and make a better life for ourselves.
